Common questions

What does this character counter measure?

It counts total Unicode characters, characters without whitespace, words, lines, Chinese characters, English letters, numbers, and punctuation or symbols as you type.

Are spaces and line breaks included?

Total characters include spaces, tabs, and line breaks. Characters without whitespace leave those characters out. An empty input has zero lines; otherwise each line, including a final empty line after a trailing break, is counted.

Why is there a 100,000 character limit?

The limit keeps real-time counting responsive across mainstream desktop and mobile browsers while still covering long articles, code snippets, and everyday batches of text.

How are words counted?

A word is a continuous group of letters or numbers. Punctuation separates groups, apostrophes inside a word are kept together, and a continuous group of Chinese characters counts as one group rather than one word per character.

Is the text uploaded?

No. Counting runs in your browser. No account is required, and the text is not sent to or stored on a server.
